Taking Back the Cake

a cake topper revival

Cake is my favorite food. It’s pretty, it tastes divine and it brings people together! To make the cake (okay, there were cakes) at my wedding a major focal point, I placed it where I knew all would see and enjoy it’s beauty: at the champagne table. There are many silly wedding traditions that were tacky then but have opportunity for elegance now; I determined this to be the case for the cake topper! I was lucky enough to find a couple on ebay from the 80s that resembled myself and my fiancé (this being a huge privilege as the vintage assortment lacks any sort of ethnic, racial, sexual orientation, anything diversity—something I hope to tackle). Then mindful that our sculptural family portrait would be incomplete without our beloved orange tabby, Darla, I unearthed one of those as well. Now for the unique aspect for this trio, I took the opportunity to flex my glue gun muscles and created a bespoke base using faux flowers and beads to tie in the other visual themes of our wedding and voila!

I enjoyed the process of creating something new out of a tradition that is old, using something borrowed so much that I decided to start making them for others as well. Any special nuptials (or otherwise!) coming your way? How can Futur Parfait help bring more personalization and love to your festivities?
